It is not a secret that the internet is growing and becoming a permanent fixture in homes across the globe. In fact a recent study showed that more two thirds of the world’s population is currently online and exploring the web on a regular basis. However, with this growing popularity also comes a growing concern and potential danger.
Issues surrounding internet home security have been popping up all over the news and media and more and more people are becoming aware that, even though the net seems safe with a sense of anonymity, this is not always the case. Sharing information online can be one of the most dangerous and potentially devastating mistakes imaginable and can lead to many unsettling crimes such as identity theft, fraud and even home break-ins.
Here are three important internet home security tips to remember:
Never give out your full home address while online!
Whether you are sharing photos on a community site or chatting in a forum it is vital that your home address stay private and secure. It may not seem risky to share your address with an online acquaintance, but the truth is, trusted or not, you have no idea who is on the other end of the web. And once revealed your information can be easily obtained by just about anyone.
Never mention your holiday or vacation plans while online!
Sharing vacation plans and holiday getaways while online can place your home and belongings at serious risk. Once a potential burglar knows your address, they can plan their attempt for the time when they know the house is sure to be vacant. If you are sharing your plans online through email or a forum, make sure to mention that your home will remain well taken care of. Whether true or not, mention a house sitter, neighbour or friend who will be dropping by regularly to check on your home. If you are still unsure about sharing your holiday plans, pick up the phone and call instead, it’s a much safer way to communicate!
Never share your security keypad code or pin number in an email or instant message!
Similar to credit card numbers, code numbers and keypad pins should never be shared through online communication. Email may be convenient, but it is also one of the easiest online services to break in order to obtain personal information. If you are concerned with internet home security, keep your pin numbers and codes a secret and only share them with close friends and family while face to face.
