Keeping your home safe may be easier than you ever thought possible. Personal security systems are ideal, but there are other very simple and easy steps you can take to ensure that your home is not at risk of burglary attempts. By practicing safe home security habits you and your family can rest easy knowing that you have done as much as possible to ensure your own safety. For ideas on safe home security habits, read on:
Dogs: In recent years many law enforcement agencies have done studies with the cooperation of criminals to find out what exactly makes a home safe, and what makes one a target. When asked which houses they avoid, many criminals say that a house with a dog is never an ideal choice. Dogs can alert an owner or neighbor of an attempted entry and can also be trained to protect their owner’s home and property with aggressive force.
Lights: A home which is well lit both inside and out will deter criminal activity. By placing some outdoor lights strategically around your home and property you can make it more difficult for intruders to navigate entry without being noticed. The lights used do not necessarily have to be part of an elaborate home security system, simply leaving the front porch light on during the night can ensure your home’s safety.
Neighbors: One of the most important safe home security habits is to become familiar and friendly with your neighbors. This may not seem like a security habit; however, if you are friendly with those who live in the homes surrounding your own, they are more likely to keep an eye on your property when you are not able. A nosy neighbor may seem less than ideal, but the truth is intruders will not approach a home if they feel that others may be watching.
Keys: A common mistake that many homeowners make is hiding a spare key in a “secret” location outside their home. This of course is not ideal. Someone who is planning on breaking in to a home will often case the location before making their first attempt. In many cases, an intruder will only have to watch your home for a few days before discovering where your spare key is hidden. Leaving a spare key with a trusted neighbor is a better plan and is an incredibly important and safe home security habit.
